Artist in Residence
“Artist in residence is generally to live and work in a foreign art institution. Fundamentally speaking, it is an action of looking into inner self in a foreign land. Quite often I get sick in an unfamiliar environment, such as catching a cold or getting food poisoning. While being laid low with a fever, many thoughts come and go in my mind; then all of a sudden, some good ideas pop up strangely. When I get better, I try to realize the idea. I face numerous obstacles, but at the same time, there are new findings toward my creation. Finally, every working process is in order and once my studio is all set up, I create works continuously. By the end of the residency, I would have enough works for a solo exhibition.”

Preparation for living in a foreign land
I was a studio art teacher in high schools for six and a half years in Japan. I think it was the best job I have ever had in my life. However, I could not have the joy of the current “travel and work” lifestyle if I had continued teaching in Japan. After 1000 days of searching…
