1000 Day Plan
1978 – 1980
Preparation for living in a foreign land
I was a studio art teacher in high schools for six and a half years in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan. I think it was the best job I have ever had in my life. However, I could not have had the joy of my current “travel and work” lifestyle if I had continued teaching in Japan. In my 20s, I travelled to various countries in Europe, Asia and North America during holiday breaks. After my second trip to India, I decided to move to a foreign country. It could be a base to live and travel from. I made a 1000 day preparation plan and started to practice every day to get myself ready for the new life.
1974 | Two-month trip to Europe; I found no hope. |
1975 | Two-month trip to Mexico and San Francisco, U.S.; I spoke Spanish. Amazing! |
1976 | Two-month trip to India; I found a dream. |
1977 | The second trip to India; travelling is not enough! I want to live in a foreign land. |

I created a hurdle onto my dream; 1000 days plan; It was the everyday practice and study of studio arts and languages for 1000 days. I said to myself “when I completed the task, I am allowed to quit my job and leave the country”. |
1. A Free Port outside Japan
AUROVILLE in Pondicherry, Tamir Nado State in South India was an option at the time. It was quite international in a rural atmosphere and had a good spirit of a new beginning. I could’ve participated in the project of an ideal town as an artist. However, Canada became my home country as it was welcoming newcomers from the world and I was able to get citizenship.
2. Skill of Communication
I focused on conversational language study of English, French and Spanish. I completed three language courses by home study in three years. I continued studying those three languages in a school after I came to Canada. I moved to Vancouver from Montreal in 1987. The difficulty of keeping up the languages rose and my French rusted through lack of use.
3. Practice art towards obtaining a unique expression
After 1000 days of searching for my own expression in art, I wanted to be exposed to an outer world. It was a great opportunity to become a studio art graduate student at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, because I needed to pump up my spirit to explore my inner world.
Meditation in Ellora Buddhist caves in India in 1975.
Concordia University Burdget building studio in Montreal, Canada in 1983.
Belvedere Court Studio on Main street, Vancouver, Canada in 1988.
